Did you know the Paloma, not the Margarita, is Mexico’s most beloved cocktail?
One of my favorite drinks from our trips to Mexico is this sparkling, rosey-hued, bittersweet grapefruit drink called the Paloma. The Paloma is a traditional Mexican drink that features tequila, grapefruit juice, sparkling grapefruit soda, sparkling water, and fresh lime juice. It’s the most perfect thirst quenching mash up! I just love its citrusy flavor, tangy sweetness, and pretty pink color.
The best part about the Paloma is that it’s super simple to make. You’ll definitely want to use 100% agave silver or blanco tequila in this cocktail for the crispest, clean flavor. Let that citrus shine through!

Description
The Paloma is a traditional Mexican drink that features tequila, grapefruit juice, sparkling grapefruit soda, sparkling water, and fresh lime juice. It’s the most perfect thirst quenching mash up! I just love its citrusy flavor, tangy sweetness, and pretty pink color.
Ingredients
(links below are the gluten free & celiac safe products I used in this recipe)
- ice
- 1 ½ ounces tequila (silver or blanco)
- 1 ½ ounces grapefruit juice
- juice from ¼ lime
- 1 ounce sparkling grapefruit soda
- 1 ounce sparkling water
- lime wedge for garnish
chili lime salt
Instructions
step 1
Pour some flaky sea salt and tajin into a small dish. Moisten the rim of a glass with a lime wedge. Dip the rim of the glass into the salt and tajin mixture, turning it as needed to coat the rim.
step 2
Fill the glass with ice. Pour in the tequila, grapefruit juice, and lime juice, stir. Top with sparkling grapefruit soda and sparkling water, garnish with a lime wedge.
Notes
to make a lighter Paloma: use la croix grapefruit or sparkling water instead of sparkling grapefruit soda. It will be a little less sweet and have less calories.
to make a spicy Paloma: add a few slices of fresh jalapeno.
