A lightened up version of your favorite fall dessert, this gluten free maple whiskey apple cinnamon crisp is naturally sweetened with maple syrup and coconut sugar and topped with a deliciously crunchy cinnamon pecan oat topping. A healthier apple crisp that’s gluten free, refined sugar free, dairy free and vegan.

You’d never know this apple cinnamon crisp recipe was lightened up and a little bit healthier for you. Instead of using regular sugar like most apple crisp recipes call for, I used coconut sugar in the topping and maple syrup in the filling. I also used gluten free wholesome flour in the topping instead of regular gluten free flour which adds whole grains, fiber, and omega fatty acids. Also, subbing coconut oil for butter makes this apple cinnamon crisp both dairy free and vegan. This is a dessert everyone can enjoy!

Gluten Free Maple Whiskey Apple Cinnamon Crisp
- Diet: Gluten Free
Description
A lightened up version of your favorite fall dessert, this maple whiskey apple cinnamon crisp is naturally sweetened with maple syrup and coconut sugar and topped with a deliciously crunchy cinnamon pecan oat topping. A healthier apple crisp that’s gluten free, refined sugar free, dairy free and vegan.
Ingredients
(links below are the gluten free & celiac safe products I used in this recipe)
crisp topping
- 1 cup gluten free 1:1 wholesome flour (or sub any gluten free 1:1 all-purpose flour)
- 1 cup Bakery on Main gluten free rolled oats
- ½ cup chopped pecans
- ½ cup coconut sugar
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- ½ cup refined coconut oil, melted
apple filling
- 6 honeycrisp apples, peeled, cored, and cut into ¼ inch thick slices
- ½ cup pure maple syrup
- zest from ½ lemon
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon gluten free whiskey (or sub pure maple syrup)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- 2 teaspoons gluten free corn starch
vanilla whiskey yogurt cream (optional, not dairy free/vegan)
- ½ cup plain greek yogurt
- 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1 tablespoon gluten free whiskey
- ¼ cup powdered sugar
- ½ teaspoon pure vanilla bean paste
Instructions
step 1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Generously grease a 10-inch skillet or 8-inch x 8-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.
step 2
To make the crisp – In a large bowl, add the gluten free flour, oats, pecans, coconut sugar, cinnamon, and kosher salt. Stir until well combined. Pour in the melted coconut oil and stir until the mixture becomes crumbly and resembles wet sand. Place in the fridge until ready to use.
step 3
To make the filling – In a large bowl, add the apples, maple syrup, lemon zest, lemon juice, gluten free whiskey, vanilla bean paste, cinnamon, and gluten free corn starch. Toss well to combine.
step 4
Remove the crisp from the fridge and break up any large chunks with a fork. The coconut oil has hardened making the crisp a large solid chunk. Don’t worry, it breaks apart very easily.
step 5
Pour the apples and their liquid into the prepared skillet or baking dish and sprinkle the crisp topping evenly over the apples.
step 6
Bake the crisp on a baking sheet (just in case the filling bubbles over) for 40 to 55 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. Remove from the oven and cool for 10 minutes. Serve warm with your favorite ice cream or homemade vanilla whiskey yogurt cream.
step 7
While the crisp is cooling, make the vanilla whiskey yogurt cream. Place all ingredients in a medium size mixing bowl. Using a hand mixer, mix on medium speed for 2 to 3 minutes or until everything is combined and smooth.
