Who doesn’t love a big juicy burger? I’d never turn one down! These juicy bison burgers are the new healthier version of the traditional classic beef hamburger. Super delicious and packed with so much flavor, ground bison is the healthier alternative to ground beef that everyone should know about.
I have walked right past the ground bison so many times on my trips to Costco over the years. Something on this last trip was different. I thought to myself “hey, why don’t you try the ground bison for a change”. So, I put it in my cart, and here we are!
It turns out bison is much healthier than beef. It has fewer calories, less fat, and is an excellent source of protein and iron. It also has a richer flavor than beef and doesn’t taste gamey at all (believe me, I’d tell you if it did). You probably couldn’t taste the difference between the two if nobody told you. So why not choose the healthier option? That’s a no brainer to me!
These juicy bison burgers are super easy to make and are so delicious. Just form the ground bison into patties, season with salt and pepper, cook in a skillet with a little butter and olive oil, top with a few slices of cheddar cheese and place on a toasted bun with your favorite toppings. You’ve got dinner from start to finish in 15 minutes or less!
Since the bison is leaner than beef, the patties tend to cook better in a skillet vs. on the grill. The little bit of butter and olive oil in the skillet help create the perfect crust on the outside of the patties while keeping them nice and juicy. The burgers are also very delicate because of how lean they are, so if you do cook them on the grill, make sure to handle them carefully and do not overcook them or you will have a dry burger.

Ingredients

- 1 pound 90% lean ground bison, divided
- kosher salt
- freshly ground black pepper
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 4 slices sharp cheddar cheese
For Assembly
- 4 gluten free hamburger buns, toasted
- optional condiments: mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup
- optional toppings: sliced red onion, sliced tomato, sliced avocado, butter lettuce
Instructions
Step 1
Divide ground bison into 4 equal portions and shape into ½ inch thick patties. Season generously with salt and pepper.
Step 2
Place a large skillet over medium heat. Add butter and olive oil. Once butter is melted, add the patties and cook 3-4 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or until the desired temperature is reached.
Step 3
During the last few minutes of cooking, add a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each patty; cover and cook for about 2 minutes while the cheese melts.
Step 4
While the pasties rest, lightly toast the buns in the oven or toaster. Once toasted, add your desired condiments and toppings; mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, sliced red onion, sliced tomato, sliced avocado, and butterhead lettuce. Serve immediately.
