Hello and welcome to Glutenless Apron!
Thank you so much for being here. My name is Emily and I am the home cook, recipe developer, photographer, stylist, and voice behind Glutenless Apron. This little corner of the internet is where I can share with you how to make simple, delicious, and healthy gluten free and celiac safe food. Everything I share on this site is 100% gluten free and celiac safe, so you can rest assured.
Glutenless Apron got started at the beginning of 2020 out of my desire to help others learn how to make delicious gluten free and celiac safe food, without having to compromise. I have learned over the past 11 years that any recipe can be converted into a gluten free and celiac safe recipe – just by making a few tweaks and ingredient substitutions, and still be delicious. You have come to the right place if you want to add delicious and tasty gluten free recipes to your home cooking.
Where It All Started
I’ve been making gluten free food since the end of 2009 when I met my now-husband, who had been diagnosed with celiac disease a few months prior. When we first met he was just getting started on his new lifestyle – a gluten free journey – and I decided to come along for the ride!
Before meeting my husband, I was never much of a cook. I was a college student who would go grocery shopping about once a month just to have something to snack on in my pantry. I was always eating out because it was just easier.
Being with someone who had celiac disease changed all of that. Back in 2009, going out to eat and having celiac disease didn’t really go hand in hand. We learned very quickly how difficult it was to find a restaurant that had a gluten free menu, let alone a staff member who knew what gluten even was. We got a lot of ‘deer in the headlights’ looks everywhere we went when we asked if they had anything that was gluten free.
So, when you can no longer go out to eat and feel confident you won’t be ‘glutened’, you cook at home. So that’s what we did, we made everything we ate from our own kitchen. This is when my passion for cooking and baking all started.
Together we have tested countless gluten free products over the years, many bad ones in the beginning (too many to count), and so many great ones more recently. I can remember going grocery shopping in 2010 and finding it so hard to find gluten free products, let alone ones that actually tasted decent. Fast forward to today and I feel so spoiled with the options we now have. They actually taste amazing!
In the beginning, it was so frustrating trying to make our favorite ‘normal’ recipes gluten free, there were just no “off the shelf” equivalent products to make correct substitutions in recipes and have them turn out right. We also didn’t have any knowledge of how to use these new to us products and achieve good results. Potato starch, tapioca flour, xanthan gum, guar gum – just to name a few of the new ingredients we had to work with (which I had never even heard of before). I can remember baking a batch of chocolate chip cookies and having to make my own gluten free flour blend with xanthan gum, mixing the batter, baking them off and they literally tasted like grass. Literally grass! At that moment I thought, wow, is this ever going to get any better? It has, it really has! Now going to the grocery store is so easy, and there are so many great gluten free and celiac safe options.
At this point, I feel like I am somewhat of an “expert” when it comes to gluten free food and celiac safe products. My hope is that I can help you – learn that every recipe, no matter what it is, can be made gluten free and celiac safe, help you navigate your way through eating a gluten free diet, and make it as easy as possible for you.
What You Will Find Here
Here I will share with you my favorite gluten free recipes, products, celiac safe restaurants, things I cannot live without, helpful tips, and hopefully teach you how to make living with celiac disease and eating a gluten free diet a little easier.
There is a wide variety of different types of food here and a pretty even split between sweet and savory dishes. Most of the recipes I make are geared toward being on the healthier side. I love cutting back on refined sugars whenever possible by using honey, maple syrup, and coconut sugar. I mean, why not use all-natural sweeteners when you can, right? I also love using whole grain flour when I can to get more nutrients into my food. That doesn’t mean you won’t find a chocolate chip cookie recipe loaded with butter and brown sugar, because you definitely will. Overall, just cooking and baking with ingredients that are better for you. When you use real, wholesome ingredients in your food, you just feel better.
Thank you so much for stopping by! I do hope you find a recipe (or a few) that you love.
xoxo, Emily
